Golden Retriever Hangs Out On The Roof So Much Mom Had To Write A Sign Explaining Why

Some dogs like to perch and other dogs like to look out on their surroundings. Golden retriever Huckleberry likes to do both, so much so that he regularly sits on the roof of his family’s home to take in the view.

Huckleberry likes the vista atop of the house in Austin, Texas so much that his activity often catches the attention of passersby, who are notably curious and concerned for his safety. The result is Huckleyberry’s mom answers the knocking on her door several times a week.

Huckleyberry’s mom understands people’s good intentions but got a bit fed up with the constant knocking and the question “do you know there’s a dog on your roof?” So she decided to put a sign up outside her house explaining Huckleberry’s perch.

The sign reads:

‘Huckleberry is living up to his name [a reference to Huckleberry Finn] and learned how to jump onto our roof from the backyard. We never leave him in the backyard without someone being at home. He will not jump off unless you entice him with food or a ball!’

‘We appreciate your concern but please do not knock on our door – we know he’s up there! But please feel free to take pictures of him and share with the world! #hucktheroofdog’

The sign has had the desired effect and now the family only gets a knock on their door once or twice week.

And photos of Huckleberry are popping up on social media. One photo of Huckleberry was recently shared on reddit, prompting many questions from readers.

One person asked if Huckleberry’s mom if she can hear Huckleberry on the roof. She responded, “Yes, it’s annoying, especially with an infant who’s trying to nap,” adding, “The worst is when someone starts waving at him and he bolts to the front of the house – I’m surprised all my shingles are still intact.”

Another person asked, well, a perfectly natural question. Has Huckleberry ever pooed on the roof?

She jokingly answered, “Now that you’ve said that…I have been wondering why my gutters have been clogged and there aren’t any trees around them…”

The family just adopted a new dog named Bluebell and it seems the young dog is following in Huckleberry’s footsteps…literally.

They shared a photo of Bluebell on the roof.

Soon it will be a bit too warm for the dogs on the shingled roof and they’ll start to enjoy summer activities like swims at the beach.

But when it’s cool enough outside, you’ll know where to find Huckleberry.
