It was a sad day for the Houston Police Department earlier this week when a police horse was struck and killed while out on duty. Charlotte, a police horse for four years, was patrolling the city streets with Officer D. Herrejon when she was startled by a cement truck. Charlotte panicked and bucked the officer off her back and ran into the street where she was hit by a car.
As she lay injured in the street, her partner stayed by her side to give her comfort in her last moments. Officer Herrejon cradled Charlotte’s head and held it to his chest as she passed away.

The unfortunate incident was deemed a no fault accident. The Houston Police Department announced Charlotte’s death with a few words of about the horse’s service. They wrote:
“It is with heavy hearts that we announce the death of Charlotte, an HPD Mounted Patrol horse, who died in the line of duty this morning in a motor vehicle accident. …

“Charlotte came to HPD as an unstarted 2-year old Tennessee Walker from Oklahoma. She thrived in HPD Mounted Patrol’s barefoot and natural horsemanship programs. She passed her evaluation period with flying colors and was working the streets of Downtown Houston within a short time of being started under saddle. She loved her job and was always ready to go to work putting bad guys in jail or giving nuzzles to children. She served the citizens of Houston for 4 years.
“She will be missed.”
