How To Wash And Whiten Yellowed Pillows

Have you pulled off your pillow cases to wash your pillows only to discover they are yellowed? It’s not a pretty sight but they are very common, because, put simply, people sweat.

Usually, I’d throw away a yellowed pillow, but that’s a shame since they are perfectly fine with the exception of the staining. That’s why the following tutorial is so useful.

Jill with One Good Thing shows the steps to restore your yellowed pillows to a nice bright white. She says that it’s actually recommended that you wash your pillows at least twice a year to keep them white and for personal hygiene.

The first step is to check the care label of your pillow to make sure it can be machine washed.

Next, you’ll need to fill up your washing machine a third full of very hot water. You’ll then be adding a sequence of cleaning agents. You’ll need:

1 cup whitening solution
1 cup of laundry detergent
1 cup powdered dishwasher detergent
1 cup bleach
1/2 cup borax

Let the mixture dissolve and agitate in the machine before adding in your pillows and then add more hot water before running the washer with two rinse cycles.

Check out the full details in the video below, including drying instructions for the different types of pillows.
