Caring Teacher Shares Heartbreaking Notes From Third Graders

Kyle Schwartz of Doull Elementary in Denver loves teaching her students, but knows that many of them come from underprivileged homes.

“Ninety-two percent of our students qualify for free and reduced lunch,” Schwartz tells ABC News. “As a new teacher, I struggled to understand the reality of my students’ lives and how to best support them. I just felt like there was something I didn’t know about my students.”

Wanting to understand her students better, Schwartz thought up a lesson plan called “I Wish My Teacher Knew.” She asked them to finish the sentence, but she had no idea the answers she would get would have such an impact. Their responses are heartbreaking!

Here are what some of the students wrote and that Schwartz tweeted under the hashtag #IWishMyTeacherKnew:

wishmyteacher-2

wishmyteacher-3

wishmyteacher-4

The school received an outpouring of donations and support after Schwartz’ tweets spread over social media. Schwartz believes once people realize the realities of child poverty they can do something about it.
