Community Steps Forward To Help Homeless Woman Who Walked 3 Miles in the Rain to Help A Dog

An abandoned dog was rescued by a Good Samaritan after she found him wandering in a park and ended up walking 3 miles to get him safely to an animal shelter.

Lisa Snyder was in Point Fermin Park in San Pedro, California when she spotted a dog running around barking and scared. CBS2 Los Angeles reported that the dog had been tied up to a light post and just broken free when Snyder found him. Looking at his collar she saw a note, “My name is Joey. I am looking for a home. Please take care of me!!”

Snyder managed to calm Joey down, but needed to figure out what to do next. That’s because Snyder has been living out of her van with her three cats since falling on hard times. Her van was also in need of repair and was out of commission. At first, she asked people if they wanted a dog, but of course no one did. She then decided to make the 3 mile trek to the county animal shelter in the pouring rain.

Snyder, who walks with the cane, told CBS2 that she couldn’t leave Joey out in the open in the bad weather. “If I had left him out here with all that wind coming off the bluff and all that pouring rain and no shelter over there at all, he would have ended up sick, maybe dead,” she told the news channel.

Her kindness touched viewers who watched the newscast so much that one set up a GoFundMe page to help her pay for repairs to her vehicle, which she didn’t end up having to pay for after the repair shop donated their services. The generosity continued and she received cat food for her rescue cats, a free stay in a hotel and over $3500 in donations.

In their follow up story, CBS asked Snyder why she thought people were reaching out to help her and she expressed her gratitude, “I think it is because the world is ready for good news. We’re hungry for it,” she said. “It blows my mind. It warms my heart.”

As for Joey, the 1-year-old dog was microchipped and neutered and is at the Harbor Animal Care Center. They have reached out to the owners and he will be on mandatory hold for 10 days, and if not claimed, will go up for adoption on March 13, 2015.

It makes me happy to see Snyder’s kindness rewarded!
