Family On Ski Vacation Rescue Freezing Piglet From Blizzard

Perry and Liz Smith and their kids had their ski plans interrupted when the resort they were heading to in Pennsylvania closed ahead of the massive blizzard last week. They decided to stay at a hotel in Maryland to wait out the storm when they noticed something pink in the snow by the road.

It was a baby pig “half-frozen and stuck in the snow and ice, by the side of the highway,” described their friend Sarah Pekkanan. “Right behind them was a huge snowplow that would have buried the pig.”

They grabbed the piglet out of the snow, not sure if it was alive or not. But when it let out a squeal they knew he was still alive!

“They freed it, warmed it up, and smuggled it up a stairwell of the resort wrapped in a sweatshirt,” says Sarah. “It slept in their kids’ arms last night while they tried to figure out what to feed it (Piggy didn’t want warm milk).”

They eventually gave him a nice sloppy mixture of banana and water.

The family guessed the tiny piglet must have fallen out of a transport truck into the snowbank. He would have certainly died if they had not found him.

The family named him Wee Wee and made sure he was warm and fed while the snowstorm raged on outside.

He was soon exploring the hotel room and making friends with his rescuers.

At first they didn’t know what they were going to do with the baby pig, but they got in touch with Poplar Spring Animal Sanctuary in Maryland who agreed to take Wee Wee, but it would have to wait until they dug out from under the snowstorm.

With that in mind, Wee Wee got to bunk with the Smith family for an extra night at their home.

“To be frank, it is going to be heartbreaking to give him up and I am sure there will be many tears,” said the Smiths.

“It is for the best though and Wee Wee will always be part of our family,” says the family. “He has changed our lives in the best way possible! It is nice knowing we can visit Wee Wee any time at Poplar Spring Animal Sanctuary…”

What an amazing “Snowmaggedon” story. Wee Wee was incredibly lucky that the Smiths spotted him!
