Archaeologists Uncover Amazing Discovery Under Easter Island Heads

This is absolutely incredible! I’ve always believed that the iconic statues on Easter Island were always just heads. Like many people, I’ve seen the often-photographed torsoless statues, sticking out of the ground. This has lead to the widespread misconception that the famous ancient statues, known as Moai, only have heads. But they actually have bodies too!

In recent years the Easter Island Statue Project (EISP) has undertaken efforts to excavate and study some of the Moai, and revealed previously hidden portions of the statues.

Because they were set deep into the ground, their bodies have been obscured over time. The archeologists dug around the statues and discovered that the torsos of the statues are covered in undecipherable ancient writings.

The remote Chilean island actually has many more statues on it than just the famous heads. There are 887 monolithic human figures carved from rock, and many stand fully above ground.

How fascinating is that? Here’s a video revealing this amazing discovery.
