Trapped Bakers Make Bread For Two Days Straight For Harvey Victims

Four bakers who became trapped at their workplace for two days because of Hurricane Harvey decided to do what they do best to help victims of the flood. They baked night and day for two days solid, making hundreds of loaves of bread to give out in the community.

The bakers at El Bolillo Bakery in Houston, Texas, became stuck in the shop because the floodwaters were too high to leave. To take their minds off worrying about friends and family, they decided to bake as the shop still had electricity and was dry, the Independent reported.

When the manager finally got to them, they found the shop stacked full of bread and pan dulce, a Mexican sweet bread.

Brian Alvarado, the manager of the shop that specializes in Mexican pastries told the newspaper, “When they realized they were stuck, they decided to keep themselves busy and help the community and made as many loaves of bread as they could. By the time the owner managed to get to them, they had made so much bread that we took the loaves to loads of emergency centres across the city for people affected by the floods.”

Although they didn’t count the exact number of loaves they gave out, the bakers went through 4,400 pounds (1,996kg) of flour.

Their selfless gesture has since gone viral, with many people praising their efforts.

“What a brilliant, thoughtful, ingenious, selfless, compassionate, loving, beautiful use of time and resources. Each one of you is a fine example of unconditional love. May you have health and success,” wrote one person.

Another wrote, “Your act of humanity is what we should all aspire to be and achieve.” The individual gave money to help the bakers and their families affected by the flood.

El Bolillo Bakery wrote in response, “Doing good comes back around…This person sending money to our bakers and cashiers for making bread for others when they had lost homes and cars and valuables.”

They added, “There are so many incredible efforts happening down here in Houston. We are just one story, thank you for the support, we’re feelin the love!”
