Filmmaker Turns Mother’s Voicemails Into Touching Film About Their Relationship

When filmmaker Charles Frank watched home movies from his childhood and listened to a series of voicemails from his mom, he was inspired to make this beautiful, short film. It’s an open letter to his mom. Entitled, “My, Baby You’ll Be”, the film is narrated by his mom’s voicemails superimposed over his family’s home movies.

Her messages are sweet, endearing, loving and ultimately emotionally touching. From her calling him while she was cooking (“thinking how much you would like this recipe…”) to encouraging him in his work (“I’m right behind you every step”), it becomes clear that Charles’ has a loving, thoughtful mom.

His film reminds us all that no matter what, you’re always on your mother’s mind. In turn, Charles’ film is a sweet love letter to his mom, a recognition that he notices all the love and support she’s given him over the years, even when he hasn’t been the best in returning her calls.
