Military Dog Wears A Purple Heart While Recovering With His Handler From Bomb Blast

Photos of an injured soldier and his military working dog sharing a hospital room (and a bed) have gone viral after they were posted online a few days ago.

“One of our Military Working Dogs, Rocky, and his handler were injured this week during operations in Afghanistan,” the 89th Military Police Brigade shared on Facebook. “Rocky and his handler are staying in the same room right now as they are receiving treatment for their injuries. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers as they recover during the holiday season.”

Specialist Andrew Brown and Rocky were hurt in an IED blast while searching a structure in support of ongoing operations in Afghanistan. The two battle buddies were immediately transported to Germany where they began treatment together.

Brown’s wife Kayla posted on Facebook that her husband received multiple surgeries in Germany before he was moved to the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C., on Friday for another surgery.

“While not necessarily life threatening, their injuries are pretty significant and will take some time to heal for sure,” Kayla Brown wrote on Facebook. “Right now it’s not known if either of them will be deemed fit for duty again after all is said and done… there’s still a long road of recovery ahead.”

She added, “I’m so so thankful I didn’t lose my best friend that night. I don’t know what I would have done. That man means the world to me and these boys of ours. I’m not sure what I would do without him.”

Rocky hurt his rear leg, but is doing much better and will stay in Germany for another week or so before returning to Fort Hood in the States to finish his rehab and reunite with Brown.

The photo of Rocky with a Purple Heart pinned to his collar while he slept next to Brown at hospital is particularly touching.
