This blue jay appears to be dead, as it lies motionless upside down. But after a gentle poke, he wakes up and flies away! What odd behavior for a bird.
Some bird watchers say that the blue jay may have been sunning – laying in the sun and catching some rays – something which a lot of birds do.
Other bird watchers say that the blue jay was most definitely “playing dead”, perhaps as a way to deter predators or “playing a practical joke” on its fellow birds. One thing is for sure, it has quite the Oscar-worthy performance!
