Shelter Dog Spends Whole Year Watching People Walk By Her Kennel

It was just a few days away from an anniversary no one at Seminole County Animal Services wanted to celebrate. It would be a year since a dog named Sophie arrived at their shelter. But thanks to a heart-tugging video the shelter shared of Sophie waiting in her kennel she has found a home.

Sophie arrived at the shelter in April of 2022 and quickly became a volunteer favorite thanks to her curious, friendly nature. That curiosity extended to how she behaved in her kennel. Day after day the 7-year-old American Staffordshire mix would go to the front of her kennel, eager to catch someone’s – anyone’s – attention.

After one year of no adoption offers, Seminole County Animal Services decided to compile a time-lapse video showing Sophie in her kennel “begging for attention” as prospective adopters walk by.

The shelter wrote, “At 7 years old she is constantly overlooked in favor of other, younger dogs. But how can anyone look into her eyes and not fall in love?”

In the video, Sophie repeatedly goes up to the front of the cage and wags her tail eagerly. But every time she would have to back away dejectedly.

“She’s a sweet older girl with soulful eyes and a beautiful gray coat,” SCAS continued in a Facebook post. “[She] is a favorite.”

They admit she has a bit of training ahead of her because she tugs when walking on leash. But just a few days before Sophie’s one year anniversary at the shelter Sophie and the staff got the news they had been hoping for!

“Her new dad saw her on social media and just had to have her,” SCAS happily announced. “We did it! After 364 days [of] living at Seminole County Animal Services, Sophie has found a home.”

Seeing Sophie smiling with her new dad after so long a wait is a dream come true for the staff and for Sophie too!
