Ice Swimmer Smashes Through Frozen River to Save Drowning Dog

It was supposed to be just another cold-water training session—but in an instant, everything changed.

On March 21, 2026, a young man arrived at Trukhaniv Island in Kyiv, Ukraine, preparing for his usual ice swimming practice in the icy Dnipro River. Trained to swim in freezing, fast-moving waters—even beneath solid ice—he was no stranger to extreme conditions.

Then two men came running to tell him a dog was drowning. Without hesitation, he dropped everything and sprinted toward the river.

“That day the stars just aligned perfectly,” he later said. “Right before my swim… two guys ran up to me saying a dog was drowning. So of course, instead of going to my usual training, I immediately rushed over to help.”

Thinking quickly, he grabbed a scarf from a nearby woman, just in case he needed something to secure the struggling animal. Then, pulling on his neoprene gloves, he stepped into the freezing water.

The dog was trapped beyond a sheet of ice and lay motionless. To reach him, the swimmer had to smash through the frozen surface, forcing his way forward in near-zero-degree water. “Water under ice is usually around 0°C (32°F),” he explained. But he kept going.

When he finally reached the dog, there was no fight left. The animal didn’t move, didn’t struggle—as if he had already given up. But the young man hadn’t. He grabbed the dog and brought him back through the broken ice to safety.

Incredibly, thanks to his experience, he walked away with only minor scratches. “I swim in open water regularly, even in winter, so all I ended up with were a few small scratches,” he said. “With my level of training, I can confidently say there was zero risk to my life.”

He had come prepared that day—straight from training in the river, already equipped for the cold. “That dog got really lucky,” he added.

Because of one man’s skill, courage, and split-second decision, what could have been a heartbreaking loss became a life-saving rescue. The dog survived—and today, he’s safe, warm, and healthy.
