Man Spots Bear and Dog Sharing A Quiet Moment Together In Neighbor’s Backyard
t’s not unusual to see black bears in Jefferson County, Colorado. But it is unusual to see one lounging on a back patio, calmly hanging out with a dog.
That’s exactly what resident Lucas Eads witnessed when he saw his neighbor’s dog, Sully, sharing a quiet moment with a large bear.
The bear wasn’t a stranger to the neighborhood. It had been a regular visitor for the past three years, often searching for food from unsecured trash bins. But on this particular night, the bear wasn’t looking for a meal from the neighbors—it was trying to get into Lucas’ secured bins.
When Lucas made a loud noise to scare the bear away, the animal jumped the fence into his neighbor’s yard and simply sat down.
That’s when Sully appeared.
Instead of barking, chasing, or showing fear, the dog and bear seemed to calmly acknowledge each other. Their relaxed greeting led Lucas to believe this probably wasn’t their first encounter.
The peaceful moment was eventually interrupted when Lucas’ own dog began barking, bringing the unexpected meet-and-greet to an end.
Lucas says the encounter was a reminder of the importance of staying calm around wildlife. He believes that by not panicking, he helped keep the situation from escalating—and the bear remained calm too.
