Firefighters Get Big Surprise After They Rescue Drowning ‘Dog’
What began as a frantic animal rescue call on a Florida lake turned into something no one quite expected.
Last week, a man living along Britannia Lake in Cape Coral heard a splash and rushed outside, believing a dog had fallen into the water. Without hesitation, he jumped in and tried to reach the animal as it swam rapidly across the lake. His urgent calls for help quickly drew the attention of neighbors, one of whom called 911.

Cape Coral firefighters arrived within minutes, but the situation proved challenging. Each time they tried to reach the animal, it would swim to the opposite side of the lake, forcing responders to reposition again and again.
A nearby resident, Denae Judd, stepped in to help. With a kayak, she paddled out and helped guide the animal toward a more contained area, eventually spotting it hiding in a narrow gap beneath a dock.
Firefighters carefully moved in and pulled the exhausted animal from the tight space. Once safely in hand, they realized the surprising truth—the “dog” was actually a young coyote.

The team was stunned. While dogs are often rescued from the area’s canals, this was the first time they had ever pulled a coyote from the water.
The young animal was weak, exhausted, and clearly struggling after repeated swims across the lake. After assessing his condition, responders made the decision to contact wildlife experts rather than release him back into the wild.
He was later transferred to the Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife (CROW), where staff determined he was about 12 weeks old and severely emaciated. He is now receiving critical care and ongoing treatment.

Though the rescue didn’t unfold as expected, it ended with the coyote pup getting the care he desperately needed—and a second chance at survival thanks to a community that refused to look away.
