K-9 Almost Starved to Death Reunites With His Loving Former Handler
Former police K-9 Nero is finally getting the love and care he always deserved after being found earlier this year in heartbreaking condition. When Nero arrived at the Unicoi County Animal Shelter in March, he was severely malnourished, dangerously underweight, and suffering from major hair loss. His ribs and bones were clearly visible, leaving shelter staff devastated by the condition he was in.

For Tammy Ray, Nero’s former handler and partner back in 2019, seeing him like that was almost unbearable. “When I first saw him, it was heartbreaking,” she shared. “I was even afraid to pick him up or just love him.” Determined to help the dog she once worked beside, Ray stepped in to care for Nero and has spent the past several months helping him heal both physically and emotionally.
Thanks to veterinary treatment, proper nutrition, supplements, and constant love, Nero’s transformation has been incredible. He has already gained around 20 pounds and is slowly recovering after undergoing a toe amputation caused by an infection linked to the neglect he suffered.

Through it all, Tammy’s biggest priority has been making sure Nero feels safe again. “I want him to know I’m not going to leave him,” she said. “I want him to feel secure.”
Now, Nero has officially left the shelter and is living with Tammy as a foster while she finalizes his adoption. These days, the retired K-9 is enjoying walks, pup cups, playing tuggies, and the comfort of knowing he is finally home.

After everything he endured, Nero’s story is a powerful reminder that even deeply wounded dogs can heal when someone refuses to give up on them.
