Rescuers Pull Mother and Baby Alive From Venezuela Quake Rubble
In the midst of unimaginable devastation, one rescue offered a powerful reminder that hope is still alive.
Days after the catastrophic earthquakes struck Venezuela, rescue teams from the United States, Mexico, and Venezuela continued searching relentlessly through collapsed buildings, racing against time to find survivors. Then came an incredible breakthrough.
Members of the USA-01 search and rescue team, working alongside local firefighters, pulled a 9-month-old baby alive from beneath the rubble of a collapsed apartment building. The infant’s cries filled the air as rescuers gently lifted the baby to safety.
Moments later, the baby’s mother was also rescued alive. As she was carried away on a stretcher, she could be heard softly sobbing while rescuers and bystanders applauded the emotional reunion.
The twin earthquakes have claimed more than 1,400 lives, injured thousands more, and left hundreds of buildings destroyed or severely damaged. Yet despite the overwhelming tragedy, rescue crews continue searching for survivors.
“Today we have rescued people who are still alive, and therefore these efforts will not be suspended,” Interim president Delcy Rodríguez said. “We always hold on to hope.”
Other dramatic rescues have been unfolding in the past few days, among them the emotional moment an 18-day-old baby is rescued and reunited with her father.
