Pair Of Dogs Found Near Chicago Rail Line With Only Each Other To Lean On

When two stray dogs were found near a rail line in Chicago, rescuers with Anti-Cruelty Society animal shelter quickly noticed something unusual about them — they refused to leave each other’s side.

The pair, later named Bird and Dee, had clearly formed a powerful bond while surviving outdoors together. Bird, a Chihuahua short coat and pug mix, gravitated constantly toward Dee, a calm German Shepherd who seemed more than happy to let the smaller dog lean on him for comfort.

Even after arriving at the shelter, their connection remained impossible to miss. Staff members often found Bird curled up directly on top of Dee in their shared kennel, using him as both a pillow and a sense of security.

Dee, patient and steady, never seemed bothered by the arrangement.

As the dogs’ story spread across Chicago and social media, many people began rooting for the bonded pair to find a family willing to adopt them together. Shelter staff hoped the same, knowing separating them would likely be heartbreaking after everything they had endured side by side.

That hope has now become reality. Bird and Dee were officially adopted together this week by a loving family, bringing an emotional ending to their rescue journey.

The two young dogs – estimated to be under a year old – now have a home with two young children and human parents who didn’t want to see them separated. The new family said they could tell the two dogs “are relieved” and settling in to their new home.

According to the shelter, saying goodbye to the pair was bittersweet for the team who cared for them, but seeing them leave for a home together made it worthwhile.

“From a rail yard to a home,” the shelter shared, reflecting on the dogs’ remarkable journey.

The adoption has also helped shine a spotlight on other animals still waiting for homes. While Bird and Dee’s story has captured widespread attention, the shelter says 74 more cats, dogs, and other pets remain available for adoption.
