Gas Station Clerk Noticed Girl Mouth ‘Help’, Saves Her From Alleged Kidnapping
It started like a normal morning, but for one 16-year-old girl it quickly turned into a nightmare.
She was waiting for her school bus in Hamtramck, Michigan, when a stranger approached her with a gun and forced her into his car. He drove her to a gas station in nearby Detroit—right into the path of someone who would change everything.
Behind the counter that day was clerk Abdulrahman Abohatem.
He immediately sensed something felt off. The man had the girl with him and asked her to pay for cigarettes—but then she looked at Abohatem and silently mouthed one word: “Help.”
In that moment, everything became clear.
Abohatem didn’t hesitate. He stepped out from behind the safety of the counter, placed himself between the man and the girl, and firmly told him to leave the store. He stayed close, making sure she wasn’t alone.
At the same time, the girl’s classmates—who had witnessed the abduction—were tracking her phone and guiding police to the location.
As Abohatem escorted the man outside, police pulled up. Without missing a beat, he pointed and said, “That’s the guy.”
Officers arrested the suspect on the spot. Hamtramck police later identified him as Donald Fields, a 48-year-old registered sex offender, who is now facing multiple serious charges.
The girl was safely reunited with her family.
Police later called the actions of both the clerk and the students “heroic,” saying the situation could have ended much worse.
Abohatem, an immigrant from Yemen, is preparing for his upcoming wedding and didn’t see himself as a hero. He simply said it felt “good [to] save somebody,” and reminded everyone what truly mattered: “Sixteen years – she is [a] child.”
