Trooper Helps A Dog Lost In Middle Of The Road Get Home Safely
Heavy rain was pouring down along a busy road in Kingsport, Tennessee, when traffic suddenly slowed down. Trooper Lance Willis was driving by when he spotted the reason – a large dog wandering in the middle of the highway, soaked, disoriented, and nearly invisible through the sheets of rain.
With wind and water lashing across windshields, drivers could barely see, and the situation could have turned tragic in seconds.
Willis later said he initially noticed “some kind of animal” on the road, and as he got closer, he realized it was a brown German shepherd.

“There were cars in both lanes that were stopped, so I put on my blue lights because people usually stop when they see blue lights,” he explained. “I called into the radio so they knew where I was.”
Without hesitation, he positioned his patrol car in the roadway, lights flashing to protect the area. Then, instead of rushing or chasing, he stepped out into the storm.
“I tried to usher the dog towards me,” Willis said. And then, something remarkable happened.

The dog — later identified as Luna — calmly made her way across the wet pavement, straight toward the cruiser. Willis opened the door… and she climbed right in, as if she knew she was finally safe.

Thanks to his quick thinking and calm approach, Luna, as the dog is named, was taken to safety. Not long after, Petworks Animal Services confirmed that her owner was located — and she was reunited with her happy family.
Willis later reflected, “We like to focus on traffic safety… and sometimes, we even rescue dogs out of the roadway.”
