Paralyzed Dog Found In Ravine By Drone Volunteer After Being Spooked By Fireworks

When Fourth of July fireworks sent Gandalf running, his family feared the worst. The paralyzed German shepherd, who can only use his front legs, had never run away before. But when fireworks started unexpectedly, he became frightened and disappeared. His owner, Robyn Wilson, searched until 4 a.m., desperately calling for him, but there was no sign of her beloved dog.

The next morning, volunteer drone pilot Amelia from Pittsburgh Drone Search and Recovery stepped in to help.

Confident they would find him, Amelia launched her drone and soon spotted Gandalf trapped in a ravine just six houses from home. Unable to climb out on his own, he had spent the entire night alone through fireworks and thunderstorms.

The emotional reunion between Gandalf and Robyn was one she says she’ll never forget.

“I have no words to express my gratitude,” Robyn wrote afterward. “While this story started as a nightmare, it ended with joy and relief. Gandalf could not have come home on his own even if he tried.”

She admitted she never imagined Gandalf would bolt in fear. “He had never run away before,” she said. “Everything from that point on defied logic.”

Robyn also recalled that Amelia never doubted the search would have a happy ending.

“After I searched through the night until dawn, I thought she was just trying to keep my spirits up,” Robyn wrote. “Oh, but no. She knew from experience and faith.”

Amelia and her team volunteer their time to help reunite lost pets with their families—free of charge—even on busy holiday weekends when frightened animals are most likely to go missing.

Thanks to one determined owner, one dedicated volunteer, and a drone in the sky, Gandalf made it safely back where he belonged.
