Neighbors Build Stairs For Corgi So They Can Pet Her Over The Fence

Sometimes, the sweetest friendships are built right over the fence. When Katie Sammon brought home her corgi puppy, Poppy, in November 2024, she had no idea her little pup would form such a special bond with the neighbors. But from the very beginning, it was an instant connection.

Poppy quickly fell in love with Gary and Dorothy—two retired neighbors who don’t have dogs of their own, but absolutely adore her. Every day, like clockwork, Poppy runs to the fence, her paws up, waiting for her favorite people to come say hello.

“If she knows they’re outside, she’ll wait at the fence,” Sammon shared with Newsweek. “And if we’re heading out for a walk, we always stop so they can give her some pets.”

Gary is often out in his garage working on projects, and Poppy makes sure to greet him every chance she gets. There was just one problem. The fence made it hard to reach her sometimes. That’s when Gary came up with a solution. Watch below:

After joking about building something to help, Sammon stepped outside a few days later—and couldn’t believe what she saw. Gary had built a set of hand-crafted wooden steps.

Now, Poppy has her very own little platform, so she can stand tall and soak up all the love.

“It really warmed my heart,” Sammon said. “They love animals and used to have dogs of their own, but now it’s too difficult. I think that’s why they cherish their time with Poppy.”

She shared the moment on TikTok and the internet completely fell in love with the video racking up over 3.9 million views with people lovingly calling Gary and Dorothy “Poppy’s grandparents.”
