The 11 puppies were huddled together in the dark. They hid under the furnace behind broken glass and surrounded by garbage, pipes and little else. There were no people around so there was no-one taking care of them. Their mother was nowhere to be found and they had been left in the abandoned home with no food. They did have water, which was lucky, if you can call it luck.
It was an urgent situation and the Canadian-based rescue CC RezQs Regina knew it. But they had another problem. The rescue had nowhere for the puppies to go. They were over capacity and all their fosters were taken.
So they put out an urgent call for help to their supporters on Facebook and wrote: “While our team KNOWS we have absolutely NO open space, we also knew we could not leave these puppies in an abandoned basement; with no food, no care, and no way out.”
What they saw was “gut-wrenching” and not the way anyone at the rescue had wanted to start off 2023. It was just a few days into January when they were contacted about 11 puppies abandoned in a basement with no one around.
“They have no idea how kind humans can be. They have no idea how amazing their lives can be. Right now, they are nervous. Some are shut down. They didn’t know my intention was to save them. They didn’t know endless snacks and love were on the other side of that basement…the only home they have ever known.”

“We need places for them to settle in, to feel loved, to be safe,” CC RezQs Regina continued. They need their second chance.”
One of the rescuers added, “I have seen A LOT over my time rescuing, but today felt bad. Today broke my heart. And today reminded me that we have so much work still to do. These puppies deserve a chance.”
Within a few days, the community had answered their plea. They received an outpouring of support and, more importantly, the foster applications they needed to be able to keep the puppies in their care.
They also knew it would be really hard work because the puppies were all under-socialized. Some were “extremely fearful, nervous, and shutdown.” But their staff and fosters were up to the challenge.
A month later, the pups were ready for adoption! Four were adopted by their fosters so they were already home, five were adopted shortly after. As of April there are only two puppies left from the Basement litter – Pecan and London!
The puppies have come a long way and although they still have a bit more to go to be more social and less afraid, their rescuers know “their forever families are out there.”
