Orphaned Otter Pups Receiving 24 Hour Care Are Too Adorable For Words

Ever wondered what it takes to care for rescued baby sea otters? In this behind-the-scenes look, the Vancouver Aquarium Marine Mammal Rescue Society shares the challenges of caring for not one, but two otter pups at the same time.

In its history of wildlife rescue and marine care, the Vancouver Aquarium Marine Mammal Rescue Society had never rescued two otter pups within just a few weeks of each other until now. With the arrival of two orphaned pups, Tofino and Luna, the team had to mobilize a volunteer staff of over 45 people to provide round-the-clock care. That’s because sea otter pups require 24-hour care for a minimum of four to six months.

The first months with their mothers are critical to an otter’s survival—they learn how to forage, groom, and adapt to life in the wild. Unfortunately, the rescue center can’t teach them the life skills they need, and due to the hands-on habituation care, the pups cannot be released back into the wild.

Tofino was found alone by a member of the public in the popular town of Tofino on Vancouver Island. Orcas had been spotted in the area the night before, and it’s believed she became separated from her mother. Luna was rescued from Vargas Island, a more remote location.

A former volunteer with the Vancouver Aquarium Marine Mammal Rescue Society was hiking with friends when they heard what they initially thought was a bird. Instead, they discovered a tiny furball floating at the water’s edge. Recognizing the situation, the volunteer contacted the rescue society, which then coordinated with the fisheries agency. After ensuring no other otters were nearby, Luna was flown to the Vancouver Aquarium Marine Mammal Rescue Society.

Luna has been trickier to care for than Tofino, as she is the youngest and smallest pup they’ve ever treated.

Watching how Tofino and Luna are nurtured back to health gives a deep appreciation for the dedication and effort involved in rescuing and rehabilitating wildlife!
