Donkey Sweetly Comforts Bullied Chicken

Pedro is a rescued donkey living in Ontario, Canada. Although his mom, Jo Anne, doesn’t know his past, she says he’s a very gentle soul. That gentleness was clearly on display when a chicken named Elsa got into trouble on the farm. Elsa suffered severe frostbite on her feet, and when the other hens saw that she was weak and injured, they turned on her.

Elsa fled to safety, and when Jo Anne went looking for her, she found her hiding in the most unusual place—perched on top of Pedro’s back.

Elsa spent the rest of the winter there, keeping her feet warm in Pedro’s thick fur. Pedro also offered her a gentle ride, walking carefully and slowly whenever she was on his back.

Jo Anne says she’s never seen anything like it. Elsa is now on her third winter with her friend. During the summer, she integrates fine with the other chickens and has risen in the “pecking order,” so she’s no longer in danger. In fact, other hens have taken note of Elsa’s warm winter perch—but she’s not about to share.
