Dog Helps Care For Two Children Abandoned By Their Mother

This is an amazing story! A dog has taken on the role of foster parent for two young children in a small village in Kenya. The motherly dog named Oscar keeps a watchful eye on the young children and escorts them to and from school every day.

Seven-year-old Mbogo and 6-year-old Wanjiku were abandoned by their alcoholic mother after she could not care for them. They are now in the care of their grandmother. But with five other children to look after, their grandmother cannot watch over them all the time. That’s where Oscar comes in.

Oscar began looking after the children around 6 years ago, taking on the role of their protector. She is well liked by many residents in the Kirigu Village in the Dagoretti area of Nairobi, and her motherly duties have made her well known in the area. Oscar is a healthy dog and has been spayed and vaccinated by the Kenyan Society for the Protection of Cruelty to Animals (KSPCA) a few years ago, so that’s a blessing too!

Every morning, Oscar takes the children to school where she waits around the school grounds until they are done and then makes sure that the kids return safely home. She has rescued the children when they’ve gotten lost and protects them from harm.

Mbogo and Wanjiku’s grandmother and neighbors say Oscar is a unique dog and her maternal instincts have helped the children in many ways.
