Dog Shows Up At Woman’s Hotel During Hurricane And Finds Whole New Life

Daryl Claire Surtees first met a dog named Dylan when he was living on the beaches of Grenada, just before a hurricane hit. Little did she know that their meeting would change both their lives.

Daryl works as a chef on a boat, but she and the crew were preparing to shelter in a hotel before the storm arrived. She wrote on Instagram, “I found Dylan sleeping in the rain on the beach less than an hour before Hurricane Beryl hit Grenada (Island country in the Caribbean).”

Not wanting to leave Dylan in danger, she asked the hotel staff if she could bring him inside for safety. Although they told her it was against the rules, the kind staff looked the other way. “I hid him in my hotel room for 24 hours for safety,” she wrote.

During that time inside, Dylan was the best-behaved dog, and the two bonded. After the hurricane passed, Daryl knew she had to let Dylan back outside. Wanting to keep track of him, she made a makeshift collar for him out of her eye mask with an AirTag. But not long after, someone removed the collar from around his neck.

Panicked, Daryl searched for hours before finally finding him. “I visited and fed him every day and played with him on the beach,” she said. During that time, she noticed poor Dylan was being picked on by other dogs, and she again feared for his safety.

She shared his story online, and a friend of hers in America reached out, offering to adopt him. With help from a vet, Daryl travelled with Dylan to Dallas, Texas, where he met his new family. Initially, Dylan’s new family and Daryl worried about whether Dylan would get along with their other dog, but they hit it off right away.

“I’m so incredibly emotional because I’ve never met a dog more deserving of love in my life,” she wrote at the time. “The most gentle, grateful, polite and happy dog I’ve had the pleasure of knowing.”

Although Daryl was sad to part from Dylan, she’s comforted knowing he now has a brand-new life — one where he’s loved and cherished as a family member.

Daryl also noted that there are hundreds of suffering street animals in Grenada. She encouraged anyone willing to help to support The GSPCA.
