Rescuer Acts Fast to Save Abandoned Scottish Fold Cat Found in Trash Compactor

An animal rescuer in Long Island, New York, received multiple calls about a cat in trouble. When John Debacker arrived at the scene, he discovered the animal’s predicament. The cat was inside a trash compactor, and if he tried to get out through the opening, he would walk right into traffic on a busy road.

Debacker didn’t waste any time and put out a plate of food, hoping to coax the cat out, and was surprised when he saw what kind of cat it was—a Scottish Fold. These cats can cost thousands of dollars. They are known for their floppy ears; sadly, that genetic feature can lead to a slew of health issues that cause them pain and has resulted in the breed being banned in many countries. Veterinary bills can also be high when owning a Scottish Fold, which may be why this one was abandoned.

The food worked at luring the cat, so when the cat poked his head through a gap in the bin, Debacker grabbed hold of her by the scruff of the neck and yanked her out. He noted that he had to maintain a very firm grip because if the cat had scooted back through the hole, his life would have been in danger.

“On the other side of the bins was speeding traffic, which was why I may have been slightly rough. Had he gotten away, that would have been the end of him,” Debacker wrote on Facebook. He also shared a video of the cat’s rescue.

After saving the cat, Debacker brought him to the vet, where he received medical care. According to The Dodo, the cat got a happy ending and was adopted by his foster family.
