She Was Supposed To Be A Mini Pig But Grew To 670 Pounds. Her Family Decided To Keep Her Anyway.

Meet Esther The Wonder Pig. She came into the lives of Derek Walter and Steve Jenkins in 2012 when they brought her home, thinking they had gotten a micro-pig. But she grew, and grew and grew some more.

It turns out Esther was a livestock pig, the ones that grow to several hundred pounds! The Canadians had been duped. They could have gotten rid of Esther when they found out, but they had fallen in love with her and refused to give her up. Instead, they would change their lives in a lot of ways to accommodate their new pet who grew from around 4 pounds to 670 pounds in just two years!

Esther grew up with Derek and Steve’s other pets. She gets along really well with the dogs and cats.

Just like the other animals in the house, Esther is entirely housebroken.

She lives in the house and goes outside and when she’s ready to come back in, she’ll ask.

Derek and Steve decided to eat vegan soon after getting her.

Esther gets her own special kibble made for pigs.

She sleeps a lot and has her own special bed and likes to nap around the house.

She also likes to nap with her family.

Eventually, Esther’s dads had to move to a bigger home to have space for Esther.

They now have a huge yard with lots of space for Esther to roam around and play. They’ve also taught her how go potty outside now.

Since starting a Facebook page for her, Esther has become an Internet celebrity and a champion for farm animals.

Esther’s affectionate nature and endless curiosity are a constant joy to Steve and Derek and to her many fans.

Steve and Derek are in the process of setting up a charitable sanctuary in her name. The safe haven will be a home for abandoned farm animals.

“Once we realized that Esther is as intelligent and loving as our dogs, we automatically thought about all the other farm animals,” says Steve. “So we’re promoting Esther because we want people to build a relationship with her, and we hope that opens the door and makes them start questioning everything else. We call it the Esther Effect.”
