Family Grow All The Food They Need In Their Urban Home’s Backyard Farm

Just a stone’s throw away from a busy highway in Pasadena, California, there’s a family with an amazing backyard. Their home is not like the others in their urban neighborhood and that’s because they have a micro-farm that produces 400 kinds of vegetables and fruit in just 4000 square feet of space!

Jules Dervaes started the backyard farm in 1985 when he realized the taco shells he bought for his children to eat were recalled because they were made with genetically modified corn. He wasn’t happy with that and began his family on a path to self-sufficiency.

The family now eats what they grow and because the farm produces 6,000 pounds of food a year, they have more than enough to eat and to sell the surplus for extra income!

Not only does the farm grow all organic produce, they have a few chickens, ducks, goats and bees too. It’s a pretty incredible story of how one family has taken urban homesteading to heart and are setting an example in sustainable living!
