Man In Viral Photo Cradling His Old Dog Opens His Heart Again And Adopts Rescue Puppy

John Unger’s devotion to his dog Schoep touched the hearts of millions of people around the world.

When the senior dog’s arthritis made it difficult for him to get around, John would take him in his arms and into the waters of Lake Superior to help relieve his pain.

Their ritual was caught on camera by Hannah Stonehouse, in a now iconic image.

The photo not only immortalized their bond on film, it opened the hearts of dog lovers, who shared their personal stories with John and Schoep.

The pair also received an outpouring of support and received funds that enabled Schoep to get medical treatments that gave them one more year together, something that John will treasure forever.

At 20-years-old, Schoep passed away, leaving his owner heartbroken at the loss of his best friend. He told news station KARE 11 it was really tough after Schoep left. “I didn’t know what to do with my time. He was my life.”

Now that some time has past, John decided it was finally time to invite someone new into his life. He visited a shelter to look for a new companion, just as he had done when he found Schoep many years ago.

He went to Northwoods Humane Society and a new arrival at the shelter caught his eye. He ended up adopting the dog named Bear and shared the news with everyone:

“The journey continues with the addition of Bear into my home, heart, soul and OUR lives!

“Bear is a 1 year old, 70 lb. Akita/Shep/Lab mix. I, am a very happy man, and proud to introduce him to you.”

“I am whole again…”

I’m happy to hear John is now ready to open his heart again. Bear couldn’t ask for a better dad!
