Puppy Rescued From Marine Base With Broken Back Legs And Bound Snout On His Way To Better Life

It’s hard to comprehend why someone, let alone a Marine, would do this to a puppy. But Maureen Keo, founder of Ranch Dog Rescue, claims that two Marines at Camp Pendleton severely abused a puppy that she rescued from Camp Pendleton Animal Control.

Kane is a 5-month old Husky, whose hind legs were shattered and his mouth bound shut with rubber bands. The malnourished puppy weighed under 11 pounds as result of his snout being forcibly shut. The rubber bands must have been around his mouth for some time as his teeth were rotting and the bands had lacerated skin and bone.

Ranch Dog Rescue, out of Temecula, California, immediately took Kane for veterinary care and he had reconstructive orthopaedic surgery to repair his damaged bones.

After learning more about Kane’s situation, Keo asked military officials to help investigate the owners of the puppy, a husband and wife stationed at Camp Pendleton.

Keo wrote on Ranch Dog Rescue’s Facebook page, “While they claim that the damage to Kane’s rear legs is “accidental,” – there is no explaining the damage done to his snout from binding it shut with rubber bands, or done to his mouth (teeth rotting from having his mouth closed all the time).”

She added, “All 3 veterinarians who have treated Kane agree that the extent of his injuries, and clear signs of neglect, are all a result of severe abuse.”

After Keo emailed Fox 5 News with her allegations, Camp Pendleton authorities issued the following response to Fox 5’s request for comment:

“Two Camp Pendleton Marines, [a] Marine husband and wife, are under investigation by the military police aboard Camp Pendleton and their unit for allegations of animal abuse.

“Their command is focusing their attention on the matter and after investigation will come up with a determination on what action will be handed down. Once the investigation has wrapped up, Camp Pendleton PIO will let us know the action that was taken toward the couple.”

Keo says she too has been reassured a comprehensive investigation is being conducted and hopes for a appropriate resolution. She updated everyone on Facebook writing: “Global investigators are being dispatched to interview all involved parties, and the situation is not being taken lightly. We appreciate everyone’s support and words of encouragement.”

As for Kane, he’s getting better each and every day. His recovery will be a long process but he is a resilient dog and is up and walking on his legs once again.

In even better news, someone has already stepped forward to adopt him and they have experience with special needs pets.

Keo said, “In six weeks or so, when the beautiful baby boy has recovered from surgery, Kane will join a loving family experienced with special needs pets.”

In the heartwarming video below, Kane is up and walking and feeling well enough to sing the song of his people while waiting for breakfast! Awesome!

In the latest update from Ranch Dog Rescueon November 19, 2015, they received a letter from the USMC with an update into the case. It stated that the woman is “pleading guilty to inhumane treatment of her dog, 4 specifications, at a summary court-martial.” The letter goes on to state that the Lance Corporal will be “separated from the Marine Corps with an Other Than Honorable characterization of service, the lowest characterization of service that a Marine can receive when administratively separated.”

Meanwhile, Kane continues to heal and thrive and grow. Keo writes, “Kane is proof that love can heal most things!”

He has settled in with his new family too. “Kane is thriving in his furever home,” RDR wrote in a recent update in May 2017. “Every once in awhile he’ll come to visit us, which we absolutely love, but as much as we’d love to see him 24/7, he has the most amazing home with a long time friend. Not only has he gotten past his horrific abuse, he has also become a local celebrity. He actually feels like he’s one ‘cool cat’.”
