Drone Captures Haunting Footage Flying Over Nazi Concentration Capture

Seventy years after Soviet forces liberated the Nazi concentration camp of Auschwitz-Birkenau, a drone was flown over the site and took this powerful footage. The drone video captures just how massive in scale the death camp was, with its guard towers, dormitories, crematoriums, and work yards. It also captures the railroad tracks that ushered over a million people to their deaths and the infamous entrance way with the words “Arbeit Macht Frei” (“Work sets you free”) emblazoned on the gate.

Today, the site in Poland is maintained as a World Heritage Site and serves as a remembrance of the Holocaust and all those who lost their lives at the horrific camp during World War II.

It was on January 27, 1945, the Soviet army entered Auschwitz and liberated more than 7,000 remaining prisoners, who were mostly ill and dying. It is estimated that at minimum 1.3 million people were deported to Auschwitz between 1940 and 1945. Of these, at least 1.1 million were murdered there.

Today, thousands of tourists visit Auschwitz every year to learn what people endured inside the concentration camps. This video is a powerful, visual reminder of why it continues to be important for us to commemorate the survivors of this tragic chapter in human history, and to never forget.
