When cowboy Dayton O’Hyde saw the plight of wild horses in South Dakota, he was moved to do something about it. He had a dream to give the wild horses a home, a place harkening back to America as it was 300 years ago.
It wouldn’t be without a battle. Hyde had to fight for funds to buy the land and convince the government to send him the unadoptable horses. But the lifelong cowboy, naturalist and author refused to give up on saving these beautiful animals.
Now the mustangs he’s saved are free to roam the 10,000 acre sanctuary he named the Black Hills Wild Horse sanctuary, a place where the Cheyenne River flows in all four directions and the pristine wilderness remains untouched.
“This is as close to heaven as I’ll probably ever get,” Hyde says of his sanctuary. When you see the Black Hills Wild Horse Sanctuary in the videos below, you’ll think on Hyde with awe and gratitude.
