Performance Artist Sits Silently With Strangers Until A Familiar Face Appears And Stirs Up Strong Feelings

Meet the charismatic performance artist Marina Abramović. In 2010 as part of her MoMOA retrospective, ‘The Artist is Present’, Marina shared a minute of silence with each stranger who sat in front of her. Many people showed up and sat with her, but on opening night one man showed up and sat across from her that evoked a strong reaction in her.

The man was named Ulay. Marina and Ulay had an intense love affair in the 1970s and performed together for many years. When they ended their relationship, they decided to walk the Great Wall of China, each from one end, meeting for one last embrace in the middle. That was the last time they saw each other until this particular night 30 years later when Ulay arrived without Marina knowing…

It is an emotional and intimate moment to say the least and something remarkable to watch, as the former lovers communicate with one another without speaking!
