Abandoned German Shepherd At Gas Station Licks Woman’s Knee To Ask For Help

Dog rescuer Shannon Ackerman had just saved a Husky and her two puppies from the side of a highway when she was surprised by another stray mama dog after pulling into a gas station.

Ackerman was at a gas station in Missouri City, Texas when she was startled by the dog.

“As soon as I started pumping gas, I felt something lick me on the back of my knee, which scared me,” Ackerman, an independent dog rescuer, told The Dodo. “When I looked down, this sweet, sad German shepherd, who appeared to have just had a litter, was looking up at me with a look on her face like, ‘Can you please help me?’”

After asking around if anyone had lost a dog, she learned from the gas station owner that he saw someone dump the dog and race off.

The German Shepherd, who Ackerman named Mercy, must have instinctively known that Ackerman was a “dog person” and could help her because she kept on trying to get into her car. But Ackerman had no room with her three other dog rescues, crates and supplies, so she came up with a plan.

She coordinated with fellow rescuer Whitney Hartman, who was still at the location where the huskies had been picked up and asked her if she would get the German Shepherd.

As soon as Hartman pulled up to the station and opened her car door, Mercy jumped in.

Not long after, Mercy was checked over, cleaned up and given a meal. Hartman contacted Sauver Des Chiens, a foster group specializing in German Shepherds and Mercy is settling in nicely.

They quickly confirmed what Ackerman and Hartman already knew – Mercy is one very sweet dog. Sadly, Mercy is missing her puppies and can’t figure out where they are. The rescue group is trying to help with that and is actively searching through Craigslist and social media to see if anyone is selling her puppies.

But Sauver Des Chiens main goal is to find Mercy a loving forever home. If you’d like to apply to adopt Mercy visit their website.

Pupdate:

Mercy has found a great home shortly after he rescue. “She is living safe and sound with a wonderful family North of Houston,” wrote Sauver Des Chiens. “We are so happy for her and they love(d) her without hesitation from the moment they met. She has her own home, her own deer in the backyard to bark at, her own mom and dad and her own doggie bed. Living the good life.”

Sauver Des Chiens shares updates from Mercy’s family of how she’s doing. Most recently (2020), she enjoyed her first road trip and played in the snow! She is “doing wonderful,” which is wonderful to see!
