World’s First Water Park For People With Disabilities Has Just Opened

A water park has opened their doors with an inspiring new area designed specifically for people with disabilities. Morgan’s Inspiration Island at Morgan’s Wonderland in San Antonio, Texas, is the first water park of its kind in the world and the founder wanted it to be a place where everyone in the family could have fun.

“Our goal is to provide a great guest experience in an inclusive, safe, comfortable, not-overly-crowded environment,” says park founder Gordon Hartman, who consulted with an array of specialists including doctors, parents, teachers and special needs therapists, to make sure the details were thought through.

Every part of the park is wheelchair-accessible.

Some of the features include traceable bracelets that allow parents to locate their children, and it also provides PneuChairs, air-powered, waterproof wheelchairs that families can rent for free.

The park can even change the heat of the water to accommodate guests who are sensitive to the cold.

Hartman named the park after his daughter, Morgan, who has disabilities herself.

The park includes a River Boat Adventure and five water play areas that offer a variety of splashy elements such as raintrees, falls, pools, geysers, jets, water cannons and tipping buckets.

Children with disabilities get free admission to the park.

“Morgan’s Inspiration Island promises to give individuals with physical or cognitive special needs a place where they can splash and play without barriers,” Hartman says. “[It] is not a special-needs park; it’s a park of inclusion.”

“Morgan’s Inspiration Island – like Morgan’s Wonderland – will concentrate on inclusion and inspire guests with special needs to do things previously thought not to be in their range of capabilities,” he explains. “Those without disabilities and those with, including individuals in wheelchairs, guests with hearing and visual impairments and even guests on ventilators, will be able to play alongside each other and gain a greater appreciation of one another.”

What a fantastic initiative. Share the news about this wonderful water park with your friends and family.
