When a sick newborn squirrel arrived at the Merrill Animal Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida, he was ice cold and barely breathing. A Good Samaritan had found the squirrel on the ground outside of their house and rushed them in to see if they could help.
As luck would have it, Polly, a veterinary technician at the clinic, is a squirrel rehabber with 10 years experience. She took the tiny animal into her care and did a sweet “newborn baby photoshoot” of her rescue as she nursed him back to health.
Polly shared the cute photos with Reshareworthy.com and also explains how he ended up with the name “Cardboard”.
When the vets evaluated Cardboard they immediately placed him on heat support to warm him up. That worked in reviving him and he began slowly to start to move. But Cardboard wasn’t “out of the woods” yet.
“Unfortunately, his breathing seemed labored and the veterinarian was concerned about pneumonia,” Polly shared with Reshareworthy.com.
“We did radiographs and Cardboard was given antibiotics.” she said.
Polly added, “After lots of care and attention (and late nights), he seems to have made a full recovery and is growing every day!”
Cardboard also looks adorable in his rose headband.
Cardboard got his unusual name after it was chosen by the veterinarian who saved his life. “Our receptionist mentioned ‘nothing good comes in a cardboard box’ (anyone who works in an animal clinic can understand) and the name just made sense,” Polly explained.
Cardboard continues to be on the mend and when he’s healthy and old enough he will be released back into the wild.
In the meantime, here are a few more cute pictures of Cardboard being cared for by Polly.
