She is leucistic, says Dr. Derek Lee, the founder and scientist at the Wild Nature Institute. It’s a condition that means her skin cells are incapable of making pigment. But she is not a pure white, like say, an albino animal would be.

Omo is accepted by other giraffes and has been seen with a large herd. She’s now 15 months old and survived the difficult first year, when giraffes are targeted by big cats and hyena.

Dr. Lee said her chances of becoming fully grown are good, but unfortunately, many adult giraffes are poached for their meat and her unique coloration could make her an easy target.

With Dr. Lee and the park rangers are working to protect beautiful animals like Omo from anti-poaching, hopefully Omo will continue to thrive and be happy and healthy!
