Community Says Tearful Goodbye To Heroic Military Working Dog On Her Final Ride

This is so touching and heartbreaking at the same time. Sgt. Canvas, who served multiple tours in Iraq, was trained to sniff out up to 70 different bombs. The K-9 tried to save her partner, Retired U.S. Marine Corps Cpl. Moseley when they were out on a mission in Afghanistan, searching for IEDs. Mosley remembers the frightening moment, “As I was walking towards those stairs I saw her run out of the corner of my eye and give me a signal that there was a bomb there but… I already had my foot on it.”

Moseley lost his leg but he survived and Canvas also sustained injuries that no one knew about until years later. The two retired together to his home in Minden, Louisiana. Canvas had been taking medication for severe arthritis and back injuries she sustained from the explosion. Recently, she went from an energetic, playful dog to one that could not walk and was in constant pain.

That’s when Moseley and his family made the hard choice to say goodbye to their beloved pet. The small town of Minden came together and gave Canvas a hometown procession to honor the K-9’s service and to support the Marine, who earned a Purple Heart in Afghanistan.

It was an emotional scene outside of the animal hospital, the Press-Herald reported, as active and retired military, guard riders and the community payed their respects and bid the heroic dog a final farewell.

May you Rest In Peace, Sgt. Canvas.
