Clever Elephant Figures Out How To Cross Blocked Railway Track

A clever wild elephant was caught on camera figuring out how to cross a railway track that was blocked to traffic in a wildlife park.

The elephant is seen approaching the rail-guard gate in Chapramari Wildlife Sanctuary northern West Bengal, India. Although the tuskless male elephant – called a Makhna – could probably walk right through the gates without problem, the elephant instead takes a bit of time to figure out how to navigate the obstacle.

He uses his trunk to push up the crossing barrier, then ambles his way across the tracks. But then he has to get passed the second barrier. This one is lower to the ground and can’t be lifted by his trunk. Growing impatient, Makhna pushes it down with his trunk and gingerly steps over it.

What a smart elephant!
