Hundreds Of Dogs Who Were Destined To Be Food Now Have A Second Chance At Life

One of the largest dog meat farms in South Korea has shut its doors and with its closure 250 dogs have a new lease on life. The dogs are being flown to shelters and rescues in the United States and Canada to find homes and live their lives as pets.

Humane Society International (HSI) is coordinating the closure and said it is the fifth such farm that the charity has closed down as part of its campaign to end the eating of dogs in South Korea.

In this particular instance, the owner of the farm, Gong In-young contacted the HSI last year as he wanted to get out of the business. “It’s a dying business,” he told the Japan Times. “In the past, people ate dogs because there was nothing else to eat. But nowadays, young people don’t have to eat it,” he said. “It’s becoming weird for people.”

South Koreans are believed to consume between 1.5 million and 2.5 million dogs every year, but the industry is in decline, with little demand among the younger generation. HSI is working with local farmers to help them phase out of the dog meat industry.

A number of dogs on this farm were rescued back in February, but 171 dogs remained behind and are now beginning their journey overseas. Among the rescues are Golden Retrievers, Siberian huskies, Rottweilers, Japanese Tosas and Korean Jindos.

Two of the huskies, Cedric and Mendy, were filmed as they arrived to be evaluated in the US. They are finally learning how to play and experience running on grass for the first time.

Many of the other dogs are beginning to arrive at shelters of HSI rescue partners all over the United States and Canada. Some have already touched down in Dallas, others in Colorado.

Here’s a heartwarming video of former dog-meat dogs who were rescued by HSI last year and what their lives are like now! The changes in their lives and personalities are remarkable!

The dogs have made quite the transition and the same adventure is now in store for hundreds who will soon be available for adoption throughout North America.
