Baby Elephant Freed From Chains Gets A New Mom

When rescuers met Bamboo, a 4-year-old elephant living in Laos, they found her pacing in the heat and chained to a small piece of wood. She was being used in elephant tourism, where elephants are often made to carry visitors on rides—a life far removed from the freedom and companionship they deserve.

When Aaron from Planting Peace met Bamboo, he saw how distressed she was. He convinced her handler to let her cool off in a nearby river, and for the first time, Bamboo was able to splash, play, and simply be an elephant. She loved it.

That moment helped show what life could be like for her, and eventually rescuers were able to negotiate Bamboo’s freedom.

At the MandaLao Elephant Conservation sanctuary, Bamboo found something else she had been missing – a family. Mae Lam, a grown adult female elephant at the sanctuary, quickly stepped in and welcomed Bamboo as her own. The two formed a close bond and now do everything together.

After spending her early years confined and controlled, Bamboo is finally free—and she’ll spend the rest of her life surrounded by care, safety, and a loving elephant companion.
