Foster parenting is a great responsibility, one that thousands of adults enter into with open eyes and generous hearts. However, as much as we would like to believe that all the individuals who care for foster children do so from the goodness of their hearts, the reality is that there are a few people who are in it just for the money.
This segment of ABC’s “What Would You Do?” decided to do a social experiment that asks the question, if you saw an abusive foster parent, would you intervene?
They brought in actors to a diner to perform a skit. The “foster mother” allows her “real” child to order whatever she wants at the restaurant, but her foster son is on a strict budget and only allowed to order cheaper items.
Many patrons are visibly upset by what they witness. Several women are so distraught that they threaten to call police and the boy’s social worker.
It’s a powerful experiment, one with an equally powerful message. We all need to stand up for children if we see them being mistreated, no matter what the circumstances.
