Humpback Whale Breaches On Top Of Kayakers

Two kayakers are very lucky to be alive after a humpback whale breached right next to them and capsized their vessel. The two kayakers visiting from the UK were out on a tour in California’s Monterey Bay when the accident occurred.

One of the passengers on the nearby Sanctuary Cruises Whale Watching caught the moment on video.

The guide on the vessel described the situation, “This was one of the more dangerous situations that I’ve seen out here. Here we were, minding our own business, checking out large quantities of humpback whales as they surrounded us. When all of a sudden, this massive full-size whale does a full 180 degree breach. The only problem is that it landed on two kayakers on a tandem rig…Pretty serious situation. Kayak whale watching can be extremely dangerous.”

This is why it is recommended that whale watchers always stay a safe distance away. In fact, it is against the law in California to come within 100 yards of whales when on the water.

Some tips for whale watching include: keep clear of the whales’ path, avoid approaching whales from the front or from directly behind, and always be cautious and courteous when approaching a pod of whales. It is not only important for your safety but for the safety of the whales as well.

Thankfully, the two kayakers were unharmed after their close encounter!
