City Insisted That This Woman Cut Down Her 110-Year-Old Tree, But She Had Another Idea

Sara Sanders bought her Everett, WA, home because of the tree in the front yard. The huge 110-year-old cedar towered over the neighborhood. But after the old cedar began deteriorating to the point of being dangerous, the city told Sara the old tree had to go. Sara was devastated, but instead of turning the 120-foot tree into firewood, she came up with a different idea.

Sara wanted to change the rotting tree into a community library. So, she contacted woodcarver Larry Carter and asked for his help. He’s never been asked to make a library using his chain saw before, but he took on the job in exchange for some of the wood.

Since its completion, Sara says the library has caught on with the residents. She wasn’t even the first one to put in a book. Although Sara says she still misses her tree, she’s glad it has a wonderful new purpose.
