Epic ‘Interstellar’ Organ Performance Inside Cologne Cathedral Leaves Crowd in Tears
If there’s one place organ music was meant to be heard, it’s in a cathedral. The soaring ceilings and vaulted stone walls create acoustics that are not only breathtaking, but often deeply moving. And during a recent performance at Cologne Cathedral, the music did more than fill the space — it brought people to tears.
Organist Anna Lapwood recently left her full-time job to focus entirely on sharing music through concerts like this one. She never expected what happened next. She and the cathedral staff anticipated a crowd of around 4,000 — but instead, 13,000 people showed up to hear her play.
One piece in particular captivated the audience and has since gone viral online: “Cornfield Chase,” composed by Hans Zimmer for the film Interstellar. A person in attendance captured the moment and shared it on TikTok, where it quickly took off giving millions a glimpse of a once-in-a-lifetime performance.
A day after the concert, Lapwood posted a video of herself at the organ’s keyboards, finishing that very piece. As she looked out over the crowd packed into the centuries-old cathedral, her face said it all — stunned, moved, and deeply grateful. In the caption, she shared just how overwhelmed she was by the audience’s response, calling it one of the most unforgettable moments of her career.
She wrote, “I have no words to describe last night. I have honestly never experienced anything like it. 13,000 people showed up to Cologne Cathedral for my concert. The police ended up being called and I’m so grateful to them for their help keeping everything under control. We expected it would be busy, but never in a million years did we think it would be THAT busy.”
With such a large turnout she decided to do two concerts back-to-back so that no one would be turned away, but there still were 5000 outside waiting who didn’t make it in. She apologized that she hadn’t realized and added a third concert. She wrote, “If you were one of these people: I am SO sorry. I didn’t find out until about 30 mins after the end of the second concert and I have been feeling bad ever since. Please also be kind to the cathedral team – they did an incredible job responding to the situation as quickly as they could…Lesson learned: I will always make sure there is a ticketing system in place in the future….!!”
Prior to the concert night, Lapwood also shared a behind-the-scenes video of her rehearsal. She – like the audiences – was overwhelmed by the beauty of the organ’s sound. She wrote, “When I say I’m obsessed with the organ in Cologne Cathedral. I cried multiple times rehearsing today because the sound is so moving.”
She added, “The organ just sings so perfectly in this acoustic. And it sounds like the dream version I have in my head – which is actually quite rarely the case.”
Fans who attended the concert were ecstatic to have been able to enjoy her performance. One wrote, “I got in with the very last people of the second concert. I waited 3.5 hours in the line and it was all worth it! The second you started playing all the pain was gone and I felt like the roof of the Dom was opend up! Thank you for this once in a life time experience.”
Another wrote, “Do you realize that the streets were FULL of people (around 13k) who travelled across the country to see you? I am so happy for you!”
