Nurses Help Fulfill Dying Man’s Wish To His Dog One Last Time

After they had exhausted all medical treatments, doctors for James Watham prescribed a non-traditional medicine for the ailing 73-year-old. Visits from his best friend – his dog Bubba, but first they had to find him.

James was hospitalized at Baptist Health Corbin and had to leave Bubba behind when he was checked in. The nurses began to look for Bubba to arrange a visit, but finding the one-eyed Chihuahua proved to be a bit of a challenge.

The dog was initially in the care of a vet, then a family friend and afterwards went into several foster homes connected with Knox-Whitley Animal Shelter.

The chief nurse spoke with the shelter and they learned that both Bubba and his owner were missing each other so much that they weren’t eating. Bubba had even escaped one of his foster homes only to be found outside of James’ house.

Is it any wonder there wasn’t a dry eye in the room when the two were finally reunited? The two hugged each other and Bubba licked James’ face before cuddling on his lap in the hospital bed. As soon as their first visit was over, the two friends regained their appetites and more visits were prescribed.

A video of James’ reunion with Bubba was posted by the Knox-Whitley Animal Shelter. The shelter wrote of the pair’s emotional visit: “Both are so happy to see each other and both seem to be doing better! The power of love can go along way!!!!!! Thanks to everyone at Baptist Hospital for letting KWAS bring Bubba a leave him with James for a while! The staff at Baptist has been so supportive for this reunion!”

I’m so glad that Bubba and James were able to see each other again. I’m sure it meant the world to them both!
