Kids On School Bus Surprise ‘Grandma’ On Her Birthday

Doris Vehar is an 88-year-old grandmother in Mentor, Ohio. For 5 years, she’s greeted the Fairfax Elementary School bus as it drives by, waving to the kids and blowing them kisses. She started the daily ritual when her granddaughter was a student at the school and she continued to do so, even after her granddaughter graduated.

The kids have grown so attached to greeting Doris’ that they now call her their “grandma.” She brings them treats on holidays, and they bring her cards and artwork.

When neighbor Kathy Shrewsbury-Latino let the bus driver know of Doris’ upcoming birthday, the school kids planned a very special surprise for her. Shrewsbury-Latino had her camera out for the special moment, which left “grandma” in happy tears.

Shrewsbury-Latino wrote, “This is my neighbor, Doris. She walks to the end of her driveway everyday to blow kisses to the kids of bus #46 who call her grandma. She hasn’t missed a single day in over five years!! I told bus driver, Stacy, that it was her 88th birthday so she had children sing to her. She cries everyday when she sees them. They make her so happy!”
