Two Inmates Become Unlikely Heroes When They See Deputy Collapse

Two inmates at the Multnomah County jail were working on a crew being supervised by Deputy Preston Dutson a few years ago when an emergency prompted the two men to become heroes.

They were heading back to the prison when the deputy stopped to help a stranded motorist and collapsed from a heart attack.

James Parker and Michael Smith immediately went to Dutson’s side and began CPR. They also used the driver’s cell phone to call 911 and continued to administer CPR until paramedics arrived to take Dutson to hospital.

When asked by reporters if they thought of running away, the two men said that the idea of escaping never crossed the two men’s mind, not with a human life at stake.

Parker and Smith later received a Lifesaving Award from the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office for their selfless actions.

Deputy Dutson recovered and was glad to see the two men recognized for helping save his life. He said he is eternally grateful for everything they did.
